Mallory’s series Return of the Highlanders and, like the first, The Guardian, much of the plot revolves around the MacDonald Clan and its efforts to preserve itself amidst the political turmoil of early 1500’s Highlands Scotland. Her derelict husband Magnus would like to kill her - or just settle for letting his men rape her repeatedly - and her father adamantly insists she marry again. (Under Highland law, a spouse has the right to leave within the first year of the marriage for any reason.) Unfortunately for Glynnis, neither her father, the Chieftain of the MacNeil clan, nor her ex-husband is pleased with her response to her first round of nuptial non-bliss. Glynnis has already been married once to a slopsucker of a man whom she stabbed in the thigh - she missed - then deserted. This aversion to matrimony is shared by the novel’s heroine, Glynnis MacNeil. He’s intensely loyal, skilled with children, and has a perfect “arse.” His only blemish: a profound resistance to matrimony born from years of watching his parents’ carriage-wreck of a marriage. He can easily defeat, single handedly, groups of ferocious warriors and, still dripping his enemies’ blood, kiss a chieftain’s gorgeous daughter witless. He’s a “blindingly handsome” golden haired sex god with a killer wit and a deadly claymore. Alex MacDonald, the Scots hero of Margaret Mallory’s The Sinner, has every attribute one could dream up for the perfect alpha male hero. The results of the analysis show that what we understand as education is not only unrelated to ethics but can also be a factor resulting in the degradation of morality in humans. But is this picture accurate and does this mean anything regarding morality per se? This paper tries to examine the facts with a more critical eye and determine whether education is indeed a source of ethics or not. Today, modern research seems to validate that premise: statistics verify that more education results to less crime. We try to educate people to make them respectable members of society, something which we inherently relate to being "better persons", firmly believing that education makes humans less prone to evil. For centuries, the major story of enlightenment was that education is and should be the cornerstone of our society. Brief Summary of Book: Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (Crossing Press Feminist Series) by Audre Lorde It is Silas' honesty that makes him stand out at the Corey dinner party, precipitates his fall, eventually reconciles him to the Corey family, and fascinates the Sewells at the novel's close. This idea of Silas as an honest and upstanding man continues throughout the narrative, all the way to its logical conclusion. This image situates Silas and his family as so inherently honest and decent that they cannot be otherwise seen, even if the photographer might have tried. The introduction of this thematic imagery is notable precisely because of the way it turns a usual sentiment on its head: “The photographer had not been able to conceal the fact that they were all decent, honest-looking, sensible people” (8). When Silas is being interviewed about his successful life, for example, a photograph of his extended family in front of their family property is brought up. Right from the novel's opening, Howells uses imagery to paint Silas Lapham as an honest person. And I think it was also for the sake of that same nostalgia that I really enjoyed it. It was for the sake of this nostalgia that I picked up Unforgiven. They're a pair of intolerable morons, but when I was 15 and struggling to get out of bed in the morning, feeling like I wanted to run away from my home, they spoke to me. As an adult, the covers have been ripped off it: Luce has the personality of a single kidney bean and Daniel should be, I don't know, in a cell somewhere, learning mindfulness and the virtues of self-awareness. It was a journey that Fallen accompanied me on, and I don't know, guys. I bought it at the airport when I was embarking on a journey that would eventually end up being a huge mistake, and would cost me dearly in adulthood. And to be honest, it was important to me at that weird mid-adolescent phase, when I was going through an extremely hard time personally. I'm now in my early 20s and while the series is long since behind me, it holds a weird place in my heart: I was never one of those people who shrieked like a harpy over Twilight, so it was this series that was actually my gateway into YA. I first read Fallen in early 2010, when I was 15. Okay, so, the thing is that I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book - it's not like I was waiting on tenterhooks for it (in fact, I don't think anybody asked for it, just like nobody asked for an Entourage movie or a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman) but this series is so nostalgic to me. Get outside your comfort zone and see what happens! Sure, it can be difficult to photograph our own neck of the woods, but by revisiting a spot we’ve already explored and simply changing our body position or the direction in which we glance, the time of day, the time of night, new discoveries are possible.
